While SC Johnson has been helping protect families from insects and the diseases they may carry since 1956, in 2013 we created a team that specifically focuses on improving the health of the world’s most vulnerable: the poorest 4 billion people who make up what is known as the economic “Base of the Pyramid”.
And we’ve made significant strides toward that vision, and significant impact in the lives of the people we serve.
Even after 137 years, doing what’s right never gets old. Helping eradicate malaria is one way SC Johnson remains a family company at work for a better world.
The “Base of the Pyramid” (BOP) refers to the more than 4 billion people globally that earn less than a few dollars (USD) per day. BOP communities are some of the areas where mosquito-borne diseases hit the hardest.

Who we Serve
Because BOP communities are located in some of the areas mosquito-borne diseases hit the hardest, our teams spend time with families there. We learn how they live their lives, what they value and what they aspire to. We learn their daily routines, how their family and community operate, and what challenges they face.
Ultimately these are the connections that help us create actionable solutions that best fit into families’ lives.
SC Johnson has designed two new spatial repellents, built for public health channels, which address several of the challenges of mosquito protection: coverage, cost, ease-of-use, and access.
The Mosquito Shield™ spatial repellent, developed by a dedicated team in 2017, is an easy-to-use product that can help protect a semi-enclosed or enclosed space from mosquitoes without requiring electricity or a flame to work. This repellent is ideal for semi-permanent homes, clinics requiring frequent cleaning, temporary IDP camps and rapid response settings. A single case holds 2000 units which can help protect 250 homes. It has been through trials in Indonesia and Peru, with promising results, and is now in large-scale clinical trials funded by Unitaid in Kenya, Mali and Sri Lanka.
